From Education...

It started with the children’s interest in knowing what happened in Haiti.  A discussion about tectonic plates and earthquakes took place.  This led to concern for the people who live there and then the question: “What can we do to help?”

To Idea...

Montessori education is about students learning through doing relevant, meaningful activities.  Our elementary and middle school students had a brain storming session to design a shirt to be sold, along with hot chocolate and lemonade, with all profits being donated to The American Red Cross.  Shirts were designed, evaluated and a final product chosen.  Funding was an issue, so students devised a presentation and contacted local businesses to solicit funding sponsors.   Before we knew it, we had a screen printed t-shirt, with local business sponsors and locations throughout the community where we are setting up to take donations for the shirts, hot chocolate and lemonade!  What an amazing experience and all in two days!  Helping others provided an opportunity for our students to learn and practice organizational, planning and problem solving skills they will use in future academic and professional endeavors.  See how without desks, textbooks or tests students can perform well beyond traditional expectations while being a participant in their local and global community.
